Let’s Make A Deal

They’re reporting on the MLB station on XM that the Yankees want to enter into mid-season contract talks with Alex Rodriguez, in an effort to lock him in as opposed to letting him walk.  I think it’s a smart move.  A-Rod is without a doubt the best player in the game and the Yankees can’t really afford to lose the only right-handed power bat in the lineup.  That can’t easily be replaced.

I’m not sure how actively they’re pursuing resolution to these talks, or if they’ve even started.  I would have to think that if it looks like things aren’t going the Yankees’ way, that they may just try to trade Alex prior to the end of the month.  Maybe they’ll find out Alex’s true intent on opting out, and maybe they can broker a deal if they find he wants to go.  You know there is interest out there.  If they believe he wants to opt out, try to deal him.  It would really stink (I want to use another word but the content filter would nail me) to lose A-Rod and get absolutely nothing from his departure.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that he stays in the Bronx.

The thought of the team trying to trade him makes me sick to my stomach.

Lock up Alex, Mo and Jorge. Now.

WOOT!!!! come on Steinbrenner and Cashman! give him a neato deal to keep him a Yankee

A-Rod’s my favorite player, and it would make me SICK too if he left the Bombers

I agree with the move to try to lock up A-Rod during the season, and it seems contingent on a couple things, such as his not opting out, and adding any extension onto the existing, very rich contract. That’s fine, especially given how central he is to this team and the dearth of right-handed power that exists this year.

That said, WHAT ABOUT MARIANO AND POSADA?!? Mariano is still an outstanding reliever, and would be better with regular work. Posada deserves a lucrative two-year deal with a third-year option, to me. He’s excellent, and could probably learn to play first in a year or two if necessary. The idea that either one of these greats could be dangled out there to potentially play for some other team is a disgrace. Cashman needs to do the right thing and lock up all three, as Beth demanded. Plus, Mariano and Jorge can clearly still play at a very high level, and Mariano has a realistic shot at 500 saves in the next two years. He’s still a top-flight closer, and he’s the greatest closer ever, by a mile. Sign them too, and do so now.

Jorge Posada started catching late, so he hasn’t had all of the wear and tear that other catchers his age have had. I think he’ll catch until he’s 40. The Bombers should give him a 4 year contract with a 5th year option.
Great catchers are really hard to come by.

I agree all three need to be signed. But how weird would it be if we didnt have Mo or Jorge next year. They have been here a lot longer than A-Rod and have contributed to all of our success. I dont think we have to worry about losing Mo but it makes me sick to think Jorge could go some where else.

Sounds like we’re all in agreement about them keeping Alex. We’re definitely going to see A-Rod’s true colors here. If he bolts, he really leaves no legacy anywhere and will forever be looked at as a guy who went wherever the money was. I can’t see him doing that, but we’ll see.

As for Mo and Jorge, they’ll be back, no doubt. Jorge won’t leave Jeter. And Mo wants to finish it out as a Yankee. They have to realize that Alex is a apecial situation with his contract clauses. They’ll probably feel a lottle slighted, but they’ve got to know the deal.

we have to keep a-rod, no matter what the cost but i really think if you’re going to make an exception for him mid-season you have to do the same for jorje and mo. it’s not like they’re cairo and phillips for god’s sake
