Gotta Swing If It's Close

There's no doubt that the called strike 3 to Matsui was outside.  The tying run should have scored on a walk.  Regardless, the pitch was close enough that Matsui should have swung.  If it's close, you have to swing.  No two ways about it.

That was pretty exciting.  You don't get much better than that.  Unless maybe you're down by four late in the game and hit 3 jacks to tie it up, and then win it in the 12th!  That would be pretty exciting, too.

I agree that you've got to swing if it's close in that situation. On the O's broadcast tonight they mentioned that Yankee hitters glance at the ump after every close pitch. Their idea was that the Yankees feel they're SO good at knowing location that if they don't swing, there's no way it can be a strike. With the number of walks they draw, I'd believe it.

I would think most players have a good sense for what is and what isn't a strike. You see it occasionally, but very rarely do you see a guy argue a legitimate strike.

They are good at getting on base, aren' they? Their record should be much better than 1 games under .500.
