Carlos Pena

Forgot to mention the Yankee signing of Carlos Pena.  I like this signing.  He'll do well in NY.  Decent power but could improve on the average.  I think it's basically going to squeeze Andy Phillips back to C-Bus.  Pena was a 1B with the Tigers but was released because there wasn't any room for him.  He's awesome defensively which will likely mean Giambi will be in the DH role at times.  Torre gives him 10 days or so in the minors before he'll be called up.

Giambi as a DH is a good thing. Sometimes he's atrocious in the field.

You don't have to say that twice. He's definitely a liability when he's at first. Every 1B should be able to hit the pitcher covering the bag.

Lets get one thing straight. Pena wasn't released because there was no room. He was released because he was bad. Now maybe a change of scenery will do the trick - who knows.

Hey Reid-

Everything I've heard on the radio (XM) suggested that Pena was released to make room for Shelton at 1B?? You'd obviously be in the know being in Detroit.

Well, I think it would be accurate to say that when Pena was released, it made room for Shelton at 1B. Shelton was never not going to be in the lineup, it was just a matter of whether he'd be at first or DH. The bottom line is that Pena wasn't worth keeping, because he was worse at both DH and 1B (meaning, worse offensively) than both Shelton and Dmitri Young. For someone making everyday-player jack, he would be spending a lot of time on the bench. And he needs to spend a lot of time getting his game back, which he can't do on the bench. So, he was moved to create room for Shelton, but only because he wasn't going to playing 1B anyway and it was pointless to keep him.
